Design Style

I went to two similar workshops at my school this year about portfolio reviews, and the speaker said something in both of them: “You’re too young as a designer to have a style.”

And it’s true; I’m all for trying out different styles of design/illustration/lettering because I never know what I’ll be into most out of all of them. But it really just makes me want to figure out what my “style” might primarily be before I graduate—otherwise, I’d end up kind-of-sort-of aiming for a job I maybe-might-possibly want, rather than confidently setting my sights for a certain gem within the industry doing what I think pleases me most. Just imagine being forced to buy all of your clothes from American Apparel when you really wanted to get into…Old Navy…or something.

Just last week, I was on fire with pastel colors and slick lettering; now I’m strangely addicted to more toned down colors and vintage-style illustration. My school teaches us to be versatile, but I don’t agree with spending an equal amount of time with dull design as with a style I particularly enjoy.

Just a thought.
